Grim warning issued to anyone who frequently gets their nails done

It is estimated that individuals in the UK invest an average of £4.5k annually on self-care, with manicures remaining a consistently popular choice.

Whether you're visiting your local salon every three weeks for a BIAB infill or simply indulging in a treat before a special event, getting a fresh set of nails done always feels rewarding.

However, experts caution that significant risks exist when nail salons fail to adhere to proper health and safety protocols.

Mariana Eidelkind, the founder of Oblique House of Nails, explained to Surrey Live: "Improper sterilisation of tools is a major concern as it heightens the risk of transferring harmful bacteria, fungi, and viruses from one client to another."

"When tools such as nail clippers, files, and cuticle pushers are not properly cleaned, they can harbor harmful pathogens, potentially leading to infections like fungal infections, bacterial infections, and even bloodborne diseases such as Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV."

Cuts and nicks can easily occur when nail technicians are trimming your cuticles, and if improperly sterilised equipment is used, these cuts can quickly become gateways for harmful bacteria to enter the body.

Unfortunately, detecting the aforementioned diseases can be challenging, as symptoms might not be immediately visible, causing delays in seeking medical advice and treatment.

Mariana highlighted some warning signs indicating that a salon might be neglecting hygiene standards.

"One of the most apparent signs is the use of visibly dirty or unclean tools," she noted. "If your technician uses tools left out on the countertop, it's likely that bacteria, dirt, and oils have accumulated on them."

"Clean, sterilised tools should be stored in sealed and sterile pouches until they are ready to be used."

She also suggests checking if the salon uses single-use items like nail files and buffers.

"These items should never be reused across clients unless they are thoroughly sterilised in between," she advises.

If you're uncertain about anything you observe, don't hesitate to discuss it with your technician, regardless of any discomfort you may feel.

Mariana remarks: "Many people feel awkward or impolite asking about a salon's sterilisation process, but a reputable salon should willingly explain how they clean and sterilise their tools."

"Inquire whether they use an autoclave or medical-grade sterilising equipment, as these are the most effective methods for ensuring proper hygiene.

"Additionally, be mindful of the overall cleanliness of the salon. The station where your manicure is performed should be clean and free of dust, debris, and leftover nail products. The technician should also wash their hands before starting your manicure and wear gloves to ensure hygiene."
